Album details and description:
Resilience marks the first collaboration between saxophonist Martin Speake and guitarist Laurence Harrison. The title reflects the difficulties and injustices that one must endure. Yet amid this sense of anguish, the music draws upon the unwavering innocence and optimism of the ever-searching musician.
Improvised throughout, the album is united by a shared appreciation of jazz and the broader musical landscape. While this common musical language provides a foundation, the music also veers away from tradition, favouring ambient exploration. Guitar-effect-based soundscapes create a backdrop for harmonic exploration, while a strong melodic core remains evident, bringing coherence to its harmonic wanderings.
The album's ambient character lends the music a rich textural dimension. Its sonic palette ranges from sombre drones and rippling tides to the avant-garde noise and dissonance explored on the third track, "No Fear". These evolving textures emerge spontaneously throughout the album, creating an immersive musical journey.
As this was Martin and Laurence's first meeting in person, the album retains a sense of the unexpected. There were no rehearsals, and little was said before the recording began. Sometimes key signatures were discussed; at other times, they were not. What emerged was shaped by the day's unique melodic and harmonic flow. Ultimately, the music captures the meeting of two kindred spirits exploring the boundaries of their creativity through shared values of trust, humility, openness, and friendship.
The tracks were recorded on 8 June 2026 by Nick Taylor at Porcupine Studios in London. Nick's longstanding relationship with Martin helped foster an atmosphere of artistic freedom and expression that was essential to the recording process. The tracks were later mixed and mastered by Joseph Harrison, who meticulously refined the sound while preserving the spontaneity and immediacy of the live improvisations. The album was released digitally on the Pumpkin Records label.
